❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a Bike Bus?

It is an adult-led group of students and parents riding a specific route together to school on a set schedule. It operates just like a regular school bus, picking up passengers at designated intersections along the way.

What is the difference between the "Bike Bus" and the "Walk & Roll to School" movement?

While closely aligned, they differ in scope and structure:

Walk & Roll to School This movement (often championed by local Safe Routes to School programs) is a broad, structural initiative that encourages all forms of active commuting—walking, scootering, skating, and skating to school. It focuses heavily on city infrastructure, international celebration days, and comprehensive pedestrian/bike safety education.

Bike Bus This is a specific, high-visibility, rolling execution within that broader framework. It operates on fixed schedules like a mass transit route, moves as a unified pack down active roadways, and often incorporates a parade-like atmosphere (complete with music and high-visibility flags) specifically optimized for swift, safe group bicycle commuting.

We live too far away to bike from home. Can we still join?

Yes! This is highly encouraged for a commuter school. You can easily park your vehicle a few blocks away from any of our main meetup points (like NE 26th & Broadway) and join the group for the "last mile" roll to school.

Do parents have to ride along?

Parents are always welcome and encouraged to join the pack! However, if your child is mature enough and you trust their riding competency, they may ride unaccompanied. Please note that while parent volunteers anchor the route, unaccompanied riders remain personally responsible for safe riding behavior.

What gear is required?

A functional bicycle or scooter, a well-fitted helmet, and a sturdy bike lock to secure their equipment at school for the duration of the day.
